Poetry (Day 303): Battle

Battle

Somewhere,
the kids are asleep.
The presents have been
packed away.
The long tangle of streamers,
like a train of thought,
is in the bin.
The last remaining balloons
form an unstable pile
in the corner,
ready to tumble at any moment.

And two exhausted parents
sit on the floor
eating the last
of the birthday cake,
like two warriors
sharing a drink
at the end
of a hard fought battle.
