Poetry (Day 275): The Fine Art of Debate

The Fine Art
of Debate

Sanding the new ceiling
so I can paint.
Sending out a cloud
of plaster and dust.

I have to clean
my glasses
every minute,
to refresh my perspective.

I have to brush away
the mess where I’ve been working
so I can see if anything has changed
or if I have gone too far.

Occasionally I move
my ladder so I can
come at things
from a different angle.

And sometimes
when I’ve cleaned
and brushed
and moved,
when I can see clearly,
I discover
that I made a mistake.
