Poetry (Day 179): Proposal

Every day the internet
offers up a thousand romantic,
imaginative marriage proposals.

There are movies
and messages written
in the sand.
And songs and buildings
and pet armadillos.

But something that we never
see, are the proposals
that go wrong.
The shake of the head, the “No,”
the disbelieving laugh.

My proposal was not
internet fodder
with millions clicking
to see how it went.
But it was perfect.

I asked.
She said yes.

Let us not judge
on that one minute—
on those five words—
that mean nothing if
and next week,
and next year,
do not follow.
